Cogito, Ergo Sum.

The following are oversimplifications but appropriate for the existential character of Live Journal:

• Religion: I am an atheist and a secular humanist. I, unlike many secularists, believe that organized religion serves an important function in a cohesive society, so long as it accepts the relativity of religiosity.
• Politics: I am a left-leaning pragmatist/liberal, but recognize the importance of conservatism to levelheaded government (though I despise fundamentalism and blind traditionalism).
• Economy: I recognize the advantages and disadvantages of capitalism and socialism, and follow a middle-to-left economic course.
• Activism: I am a proud feminist and gay rights advocate. I do experience slight male/heterosexual guilt, but I only let it serve me positively. I recognize the importance of civil disobedience, but find much of it overzealous.
• Education: I am currently on a semi-permanent sabbatical from history graduate studies. I am also teaching myself web markup/scripting and database administration.
• Occupation: I am a digital archivist and web programmer for the Center for History and New Media, a division of George Mason University's History Department.

Miscellaneous controversial issues:

• I emphatically support the separation of church and state
• I support gun control and gun rights (think about that one)
• I am staunchly pro-choice
• I support a responsibly managed welfare state where the state has more managing control
• I support affirmative action, but believe it is becoming obsolete
• I am against capital punishment
• I support the estate tax
• I am an evolutionist
• I support euthanasia
• I support public breastfeeding
• I support equitable urban gentrification
• I support heavy taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and fossil fuels
• I strongly support gay rights
• I support cultural pluralism (not divisive multiculturalism)
• I support the advancement of renewable resources and alternative fuels
• I support a graduated income tax
• I strongly disagree with suburban sprawl
• I disagree with the War on Drugs, and support the decriminalization of marijuana
• I support minimal population growth (not state-mandated!)
• I reluctantly support sensible profiling
• I support Social Security and Welfare reform
• I support sustainable and organic agriculture
• I staunchly support smart growth
• I support weapons nonproliferation
• I am emphatically against state-sponsored lottery and irresponsible gambling
• I support vegetarianism and non-militant veganism
